A day does not complete without you being in a maze of email and SMS scams. The problem is that it becomes hard or most of us to realize and a differentiate between a scam email or message and an authentic one.
Email and SMS scams come in different forms but they all aim at one goal. To get you involved in something that has a financial appeal even though you are not sure about it.
They come in screaming, sometimes flashing messages such as "You have won a million dollars" or "Following the contest you entered two months ago, we announce to you that you have won a motor vehicle" or "Work from home and earn more"
The process does not end there. The message will ask you to click on a link which will start the process of redeeming your prize. The moment you click, then you are caught.
These scams will get you subscribed to "fishy" deals and in return your own phone or credit card will be used to swindle you money for purchases you did not make.
For you to stay safe, try to stick to the following
a- Do not click on any link that is in the message and proceed to delete the message. Most of these scam messages provide site with a credible brand in it.
b- Never give your personal details in any way. Most of these scam will present a form which you have to fill thereby giving your phone number, email, bank account details and many more.
c- If you believe or suspect that you have responded to a scam message, make sure you report your issue to relevant authorities i.e. police and communication regulators.
d- Keep constant check of your bank account to verify transactions and balances and also check your phone bills regularly.
e- Verify first who you are dealing with to make sure that you do not fall into the trap.
